Belts & hoses

Belts & hoses

A belt or hose failure can cause an overheated engine, loss of power steering, and loss of the electrical charging system. If a hose leaks coolant or the belt turning the water pump snaps, the cooling system is inoperable. If the engine overheats, it can suffer serious internal damage that requires expensive repairs and can ruin a summer vacation.

Many of the same elements that attack hoses also attack belts—heat, oil, ozone, and abrasion. Almost all cars and trucks built today have a single belt that drives the alternator, water pump, power-steering pump, and air-conditioning compressor. Older vehicles may have separate belts that drive the accessories.

Any belt should be changed when it shows signs of excessive wear. But many new composite belts don't show signs of wear until the failure occurs. Any time you're in the Fairview, OR, Portland, OR, Gresham, OR and surrounding areas - have your belts and hoses inspected at Blue Lake Auto & RV Repair. We can help prevent leaking hoses and broken belts on your vehicle.

Common Questions

When to consider replacing engine belts and hoses?

Issues with vehicle belts and hoses are bound to happen, because among all the components within your vehicle - your vehicle, belts and hoses tend to have the shortest lifespan. These parts frequently suffer from cracking, leaking, or fraying due to continual exposure to heat, vibration, and various harmful chemicals.

  • Your air conditioning isn't working well
  • You have leaks or steam coming from under the hood
  • Squealing noises while operating the vehicle
  • Cracks or wear on the belt

Evaluating belts and hoses based solely on their appearance is insufficient. If belts and hoses are not replaced and maintained in a timely manner, it could lead to significant issues for your vehicle's performance.

What types of belts are there?

Some of the belts we inspect:

  • Timing Belt: Your timing belt coordinates the combustion cycle of the engine by connecting the crankshaft and the camshaft. The crankshaft rotates with the movement of the pistons and the camshaft controls the movement of the intake and exhaust valves
  • Drive Belt & Serpentine Belt: Powers accessories such as: Power steering pump, alternator, air conditioning compressor, radiator cooling fan, and water pump

What types of hoses are there?

Types of hoses vary on make and model, but typically include:

  • Fuel hose (sends gasoline from the gas tank to the engine)
  • Radiator hose (delivers coolant to engine)
  • Power steering hose (connects power steering pump to steering equipment)
  • Heater hose (provides coolant to heater core)
